I’m looking for a new Shift knob for the Matrix, and I’ve narrowed my choices to a 1) Genuine MOMO Atomik Knob (metal/rubberized) 2) MOMO used Subaru knob 3) Generic Short shifter white knob. Thoughts, Oppo?

Youre still learning stick, dont get rid of the pattern on the knob just yet. Id wait 2000 miles/3 months. Thats about as long as it took me to get driving with a clutch down pat, trust me you want it there when you are still learning

Leaving the pattern on the knob is almost always a good idea. For example, in my family we have 3 manual cars. One has reverse way to the right and down (6 speed Miata), one has reverse to the right and down below fifth (5 speed Corolla), and one has reverse to the left and up (4 speed Porsche). It’s just more convenient to not have to be confused about the pattern.

I only have one manual car currently in the household (all the others are autos) and I’ve got the pattern down already but I’ll install it when I feel I’m ready for it.

In the past few days, I’ve started shifting w/o looking, just instinct. It’s pretty easy to get used to the 6 speed box, especially the reverse gear emitting loud beeping sounds when you do so. I’ll probably get it, try the feel, wait until I’m seriously proficient, and then decide whether to install it.

Don’t spend money on these. No one ever looks at an aftermarket shift knob and thinks wow I’m glad they installed it. Just let the car be and don’t make silly changes because affording a change and needing an upgrade are different.

Momo makes some ugly shit. Plain cueball type knob (without the lame text for 6th). I have a sickspeed knob in my car, I’m happy with it.

Hell, you’re right. Sticking to the stock one.

Metal shift knobs + summer heat = OW OW OW.
I had one once and I swapped it back for the stock plastic/leather one very quickly.
This might be more of a problem with a sunroof I think but still, would not try again.

I feel like having the pattern on there isn’t that needed. Once you get it you’ve got it. Reverse can only be in like 3 places.

The five year old in me screams to get that Atomik, but the adult me says keep it stock, or get something simple and plain.

Oye. Go for something “tastefully understated” or don’t change a thing.
You might be able to find something that was a dealer OEM option so you don’t end up being “that guy” whose car looks like ThinkGeek exploded inside it.

THIS. Every dollar you put into aftermarket accessories is ten you knock off the value of the car.

I’m going to go a direction of “actual functional” stuff in the future. Like braided brake lines.

The only time it makes sense is with driver oriented cars sold to other racers, or jeep lift kits. You won’t make money but you won’t lose that much.
